"CAN'T BE NO BITCH ASS OUT HERE, DUDE!"

I'm never one to shy away from the opportunity to go somewhere exciting, try something new or experience something different.

I answered my ringing cell phone.
"HI MARC!" I exclaimed, "it's been a while, what's new?"
"Well Dan" he replied  "it's been 15 years that I've been asking you to come up to Alaska and do some fishing with me.  What are you doing?"

Before I thought of what my prior commitments were, I shot back, "coming to Alaska, of course!?!"

So that's when it all began.  I spent the months prior to departure preparing my camera gear, clothing and travel arrangements.  Such a dream!  The week prior, I had  replaced my aged DSLR camera with a nice, new DSLR.  What better opportunity to test it out than the middle of nowhere in Alaska.  Marc has always known I was an artist and photographer, and here he was, willing to set me up with a source of income (salmon fishing), a place to live (a remote cabin in the boonies) and all the scenery and wildlife I could imagine.
PERFECT!

We flew to Juneau Alaska first. There, we loaded supplies such as fuel, food and survival necessities into open-top, flat-bottom, aluminum river skiff boats.  The trip to camp travels up the Taku River Inlet south of Juneau Alaska, through rough waters, pounding rains, chopping seas and frigid glacial air.  We continue through Alaska up the Taku River into Canadian waters,  A small, unique commercial salmon fishery occurs there, where less than 30 people work like mad men over their small operations.  The cabins are simple.  The lifestyle is rustic.  There is only generator power or none at all.  Gasoline must be strained for water and wood is chopped for warmth. Sleep?...sleeping bag. I was told upon arrival, after being blown away at the shear epic proportions of the trip to camp that "you can't be no bitch ass out here dude!" THIS was gonna be an adventure!

The fishing is done completely by hand.  The nets are built and mended with twine and needles.  The gill nets are small and set into the river over the side of a small skiff.  When each short drift down the current is completed, the nets are pulled into the boat by hand.  The fish are caught in small quantities between 0-25 pieces.  They are picked out of the pile of netting on the bottom of the boat one at a time. It's A LOT of work. Each Salmon is dressed immediately (gutting and cleaned) before putting onto ice in large cooler totes.  Daily we would deliver the fish to the landing station set up by the local First Nations Company, Taku Wild.  From there, they would count and transport the product by jet boat to Juneau or float plane to Atlin BC.  Sometimes, if supplies were running short, we would deliver a 1000 pounds to Juneau Alaska in our own boat.  A long, cold trip exposed to all the elements.  We fished 14 hours a day, cleaned boats, fixed cabins, repaired motors and nets, and slept in the slime the fish left on us.

I was gone from home for over 2 months and although the trip was incredible, exhausting, frustrating, gorgeous, tiring, hilarious, demanding and easy.....I have to say WHAT A PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO TRY SOMETHING NEW AND LEARN A GREAT SKILL ALONG THE WAY.

What a trip!
Here are some photos of the trip...

GIGANTIC MURAL PROJECT ROCKING WHISTLER CANADA "FULL CIRCLE"
April – June 2009

Whistler, February 10, 2009 - Code of Creation kingpins, Daniel Poisson and Corinna Haight, have been commissioned by the RMOW (Resort Municipality of Whistler) and the Public Art Committee to produce a gigantic, super funky 65' x 6', two piece mural on the Blackcomb Way Bridge underpass in Whistler, BC, Canada. Whistler is a mountain biking, winter sports and outdoor enthusiasts mecca, North America's #1 ski resort and mountain host to the 2010 Winter Olympics. Recent travel abroad and life in Whistler gives Daniel and Corinna the unique vision for this new and necessary mural project titled: "FULL CIRCLE", to be completed April 24 to June 24, 2009.

Sure to captivate the viewer and leave a positive, lasting impression in the minds of the observer, the "Full Circle" mural will incorporate vivid elements of nature from the highest peaks to the deepest oceans. Imagine being perched atop a snow-covered rocky outcropping, basking in your glorious state of wonder and fulfillment. Set out in front, is the view out across the magnificent Whistler valley, overtop the towering vertical peaks, vast mountain ranges and luscious evergreens, beyond the tranquil, glacier-fed lakes, through the motionless rocky bluffs, across the seas shoreline into the weather-hammered, adventure-drawing seas and into the depths of the deep, dark ocean where the largest marine mammals on earth reside. This leads you back to the shoreline and into the valleys again, up to the mountains where you have begun your awe-inspiring, life changing vision; having now come: "FULL CIRCLE". Then add Daniel and Corinna's funk factor.

Corinna Haight has produced her own art and music event in Whistler, called Diversity, organizing over 30 artists and numerous bands. As well, Corinna has participated in group art shows including Artrageous along with selling and

more
displaying her work at Fitzsimmons Pub and Cafe de la Place. She took the first place prize during the Masterpiece In Motion global snowboard design competition in 2007. Recently Corinna and Daniel were commissioned for 5 months, in Panama City, Panama to produce artwork for Luna's Castle, a new, world-class hostel. She produced over 70 pieces in total, now on display.

Daniel Poisson, producing 50 pieces in Panama, also has a long track record in the arts. Having been called "Whistlers Own Picasso" leaves Daniel with the passion, drive and desire to fulfill his dream of painting...forever. His parents and teachers collected his art from the time he was born. Daniel has donated dozens of art pieces to charities as well as put private collections in place around the world. Daniel is well known in the Sea to Sky region for his large, bold live paintings at festivals such as TWSSF, Artrageous and Whistler Street Entertainment. His abstract African tribal pieces have become well recognized and collected, although his work is tremendously diverse and ever changing.

Daniel Poisson and Corinna Haight look forward to your contact regarding questions, interviews, articles or any other promotional reason. Press Packages are also available upon request.

PANAMA COMMISSION COMPLETE!

It's CRAZY, but truly amazing that this place exists!

LUNA'S CASTLE is finally a visual art gallery, and from what we have been told by travelers, one of, if not the best hostel ever visited! So if your ever in Panama....please check it out!
All the paintings are complete and hanging on the walls in every room, dorm, common area, hallway, nook and cranny etc. In all, there are over 130 paintings from Corinna and I ranging in size from a few inches up to 4 feet by 8 feet. The concept from the beginning was to plaster the walls with as much work as possible and as good a quality as possible with the most diversity as possible. We've done that, aside from the new private rooms that have only 1 large piece in each room to keep them a bit more calming.

From the time you walk in the door, you are greeted with art on the walls.....and it never stops!

Corinna even made sure the lighting was right with custom panels on every light throughout the Castle.

While I recycled some of the waste to hang these garbage girls around the place.

Luna's Castle is massive, 4 floors, and complete with a full chef kitchen, movie theatre, 2 large common areas, a 20+ seating dining hall, overhead balcony, hammock breezeway, open courtyard, dorm rooms, private rooms and soon... a standing only bar in our dungeon. In total, there are 16 different accommodation areas, and Corinna custom made a different, hand-painted signs for each and every room. Here are a few pictures to give you an idea of what is going on here overall.

Luna's Castle from the street-Panama City Panama.

The view from the balcony out the front towards the city centre. I wake up to this!

The main common area with internet, couches, balcony, some of Corinna's best work ever and musical instruments.

The chill out room with balcony, hammocks, couches and a lot of my personal funk factor.

One of many hallways throughout the castle.

The main stairway leading to the top floor.

The main hallway upstairs in the castle.

The main entry way across from reception.

It is hard to truly capture the scope of this project as it's such a gigantic place.

As well, here are the last 5 paintings I completed in the last 2 weeks.

"ROBERTS SON STEPHEN MARLEY" - 60" x 48" - Acrylic and marker on wood

"MAN ALIEN" - 96" X 48" - Acrylic and spray paint on wood

"THE DUSTY FOOT PHILOSOPHER-K'NAAN" -60" X 48"- Acrylic and marker on wood

"BARACK H. OBAMA-Hope for America" 72" X 48" - Acrylic on wood
Painted the day of the January 20th, 2009 Inaugeration- 16 hours straight.

"THE GHANDI LAMA" - 72" x 48" - Acrylic and marker on wood

THANK YOU everybody for your support and taking the time to see my work!

3 MONTHS LATER!

Mission...ALMOST...Complete.
Yahoo!...ALMOST Travel time!

Corinna and I are in the finishing stages of work here at Luna's Castle. 4 days left...for now.
Looks like we will be flown back to Panama City from Guatemala in January for a couple weeks to provide the finishing touches on a major renovation, before we fly home in Early February.
We are in the midst of framing and hanging the last handful of pieces, solidifying our promotional materials, documenting all aspects and tidying up loose ends.
What a trip!
Here's a picture of me out in the street showing the Presidential Policia some of the paintings I did of them. I had some help hauling them off the walls and out into the middle of the road for them to see. At first they thought I was crazy for sure, but they couldn't stop looking at them. Alexis' smile tells it all. At least I didn't get arrested...again.
Thanks for the photo skills Corinna.
And YES, that is a Whistler Podium Auto Detail shirt I have on.
Luna's Castle is a truly amazing place, and when you travel throughout Central America, you will undoubtedly here stories about how people come here and stay a while. Many people overnighting it, end up here for a week or more. I get a little wild sometimes and the 160 vodka jello shooters I made the other night to toss around for good measure, certainly don't hurt the fun-o-meter, not to mention it's so damn hot, everyones nearly naked!

What Luna's lacks in a natural outback setting, it makes up for with gigantic space to move around, a jungle courtyard, lazy hammock breezeway, big screen movie theatre, free internet, timely laundry service, new guitars, bad ass art, panoramic ocean and city views and super rad vibes. Panama City is a modern hub and great jumping off point to South America and many awesome surf locations, islands and jungle treks.
Check out these little cuties we found on Isla Taboga, a 45 minute ferry ride from here.
Green and Black Poison Dart Frog
Yeah! The ones the natives used the poison from to tip their blowdart points for hunting.

Fiddler Crab
These little guys are reeeeeaaaaal darn fast and beautiful saturated reds, purples and yellows.

Central American Smooth Gecko
We found this guy in an old Army War Bunker on a hike. He's 10 inches long!

Redrump Tarantula
Actually....a little bigger than the size of my palm. On the trail at our feet.

Pictures of the finished project will be posted very soon, so in the meantime, I hope you enjoy this new work from the last 2 weeks.
